Converting YouTube Shorts to MP3 or MP4 works exactly like converting any other YouTube video. A Short is an ordinary upload with a vertical frame and a different address shape, so you copy its link, paste it into the converter, and press MP4 for the clip or MP3 for the sound on its own.

How to convert YouTube Shorts to MP3 or MP4 in three steps

To save a YouTube Short you need its link, and finding it is the only step that differs from an ordinary video. Shorts play in a full-screen feed with no address bar on a phone, so the link comes from the share menu rather than from the screen.

1. Copy the Short's link. In the YouTube app, tap Share beside the Short, then Copy link. In a desktop browser, open the Short and copy the address bar; it reads youtube.com/shorts/ followed by an eleven-character identifier. The app sometimes adds a tracking tag after a question mark, which does no harm.
2. Paste it into the field at the top of the home page. Press MP4 for the video with its sound, or MP3 for the audio alone. Enter in the field is a shortcut for the MP4 download.
3. Wait for ready. The status line moves through checking video, extracting video and converting video, the Short's title appears in that line once the service has read it, and the file downloads by itself when the line reads ready.

You stay on the page throughout: nothing opens in a new tab and no second download button appears. For both files, run the same link twice, once per button. Esc or the × in the field cancels a running conversion.

Which Shorts links work and which do not

Any address that contains the Short's eleven-character video identifier works, and any address that names a page rather than a video does not. The converter picks the identifier out of the link in your browser and ignores everything around it. The table lists the shapes you are likely to meet.

Shorts to MP4: the result is vertical

Press MP4 and you get the Short as a single .mp4 file in its original vertical frame, usually 9:16, with sound. On a phone held upright it fills the screen. On a laptop, a television or any other landscape screen the player centres it with black bars on either side, which is the correct way to show a vertical picture: the image was never any wider.

Resolution follows the same rule as every other video on the site: up to 1080p when the upload provides it, and never upscaled. The ceiling is whatever the creator uploaded, so a Short filmed at 720p arrives at 720p. YouTube Shorts to MP3: what the audio track contains

Press MP3 and you get the Short's soundtrack as it plays in the feed, converted at 192–320 kbps and taking 320 kbps whenever the source supports it. YouTube Help states that Shorts run up to three minutes; three minutes at 320 kbps comes to roughly 7 MB, and a one-minute Short to roughly 2.4 MB.

The sound in many Shorts is a licensed music clip or a "sound" reused from another Short, mixed with the creator's voice-over and whatever the phone's microphone picked up. The MP3 you receive is that mix, because it is the only audio the video contains. The converter cannot separate the layers and hand you the song by itself.

One more caveat, from the MP3 section of the home page, applies here with extra force. MP3 is lossy, YouTube serves audio as an already-compressed stream, and a Short's sound may have passed through a phone app before it reached YouTube at all. Copyright: a remixed Short is still someone's content

The rules on re-use do not change because a video is short or vertical. Saving your own Shorts, clips published under a licence that allows reuse, and public-domain material is normally straightforward; downloading copyright material you have no rights to may not be, and the decision is yours. Shorts add a complication of their own, because remixing is built into the format. A Short that remixes another creator's clip, lip-syncs to a chart single or reuses a sound from another account contains material that belongs to the original creator and, where music is involved, to whoever licensed it to YouTube. Downloading the remix does not make the layers inside it yours. Reusing one in your own work calls for permission from whoever made the parts.

When a Short will not convert

The most common failure with Shorts is a link that names a page rather than a video. Paste the Shorts feed address, a channel's Shorts tab or a playlist and the status line turns red and reads: That doesn’t look like a link to a single YouTube video. Copy the video’s address and try again. No code, no progress bar, because nothing was sent anywhere. Open the Short itself and copy its link.

A failure after the bar has started moving is a different case. The service accepted the link but could not fetch the stream, and the status line reports Conversion failed with a two-part code such as 3.502, worth quoting if you write to us. Private, members-only and age-restricted Shorts cannot be fetched, and a Short the creator has just deleted or made private fails the same way. When the line reaches ready but no file appears, the browser rather than the link is usually the cause. On an iPhone the download sits behind the arrow beside the address bar and in the Files app under Downloads; on Android it is in Chrome's Downloads list or the Files app's Downloads folder.
