The uploader sets the ceiling, not the converter
The resolution you receive is fixed the moment the video is uploaded, and no converter can raise it afterwards. YouTube re-encodes each upload into a set of streams for viewers, and a downloader can only pick the best of that set. Resolution is not the same as quality

How big a 1080p MP4 is

When to press MP4, and when MP3 is the better button
Press MP4 when the picture carries the meaning: a tutorial to follow away from a signal, a lecture where the slides matter, footage you intend to cut. Press MP3 when you would happily listen with the screen off; the audio file is a fraction of the size, converts more quickly, and plays in car stereos and music apps. How to download a YouTube video in 1080p, and why it takes longer than an MP3
The procedure is the same as for any other link. The one difference is that a YouTube to MP4 1080p conversion takes longer than an MP3, because there is more data to fetch and package.

How to check the resolution of the file you got
The quickest check is the file's own properties, which every system shows without extra software. The figure you want is the frame size, written as width by height: 1920 × 1080 is 1080p, 1280 × 720 is 720p, and a Short shows the smaller number first because the frame is portrait.
- Windows: right-click the file, choose Properties, then the Details tab. Frame width and height are listed under Video.
- Mac: select the file in Finder and press Cmd + I; Dimensions appears under More Info. QuickTime Player shows the same in the Movie Inspector.
- VLC, any system: open the file and choose Tools → Codec Information (Window → Media Information on a Mac). The video stream lists its resolution; the Statistics tab shows the bitrate as it plays.
If the file says 720p and you expected 1080p, open the video on YouTube and check the player's quality menu. If 1080p is not offered there, the uploader never provided it, and no converter can hand you a resolution the source does not have.
