YouTube to MP4 1080p: what "up to 1080p" means and what decides the resolution you get

By the YTMP3 team · Updated 2026-09-15 · About 7 min read

In short

Press MP4 and YTMP3 saves the highest resolution the upload provides, up to 1080p. A YouTube to MP4 1080p download therefore depends on what the uploader posted: most ordinary videos come back at 720p, nothing is upscaled, and there is no 4K. The converter has no quality menu because the ceiling is set before you paste the link.

This guide explains what "up to 1080p" means and what decides the resolution you get: resolution against bitrate, why 720p is the sensible default, how big a 1080p MP4 is, when MP3 is the better button, and how to check the file that arrived.

What a YouTube to MP4 1080p download actually gives you

You get one .mp4 file holding the video and its soundtrack, at the best resolution the source offers, capped at 1080p. When you press the button the status line reads Preparing MP4 · up to 1080p, and the download starts by itself when it reaches MP4 ready. The "up to" is a ceiling, not a promise.

Three outcomes cover nearly every link. A video uploaded at 1080p or higher arrives at 1080p. A video whose best available stream is 720p, which is what most ordinary videos come back at, arrives at 720p. A video posted at 480p or below arrives exactly as posted, because the MP4 button never upscales.

The uploader sets the ceiling, not the converter

The resolution you receive is fixed the moment the video is uploaded, and no converter can raise it afterwards. YouTube re-encodes each upload into a set of streams for viewers, and a downloader can only pick the best of that set. If the channel posted a 480p file, pressing MP4 gives you a 480p MP4 rather than a padded 1080p one.

Resolution is not the same as quality

A 1080p file made from a poor upload is still poor. Resolution counts the pixels in the frame; bitrate is how much data the encoder spends describing them, and bitrate decides whether fast motion smears and dark scenes break into blocks. A clean 720p upload often looks better than a 1080p screen recording that was compressed hard before upload.

Why 720p is the sensible default for phones and laptops

On a phone, a tablet or a laptop screen, 720p looks sharp and the file is noticeably smaller, so it is the resolution most people should be content to receive. 1080p earns its extra size on a television, a large monitor or a projector, and in footage you plan to crop or edit.

Resolution, typical use and what to expect from the YTMP3 MP4 converter.
ResolutionTypical useNote
360p and 480p Older uploads Only if that is all the uploader posted; never enlarged
720p Phones, tablets, laptops What most ordinary videos come back at
1080p Televisions, large monitors, editing Only when the upload provides it; bigger file, longer conversion
1440p and 4K Not offered 1080p is the ceiling; higher uploads arrive at 1080p

How big a 1080p MP4 is

A 1080p MP4 usually comes in under 60 MB per minute, and a 720p file smaller still. The 60 MB is an upper reference taken from YouTube's own numbers: its recommended upload encoding settings suggest 5 Mbps for 720p and 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24 to 30 frames per second, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 frames per second. File size is bitrate multiplied by seconds divided by eight, so 8 Mbps works out at roughly 60 MB per minute, or about 600 MB for ten minutes.

YouTube recommended upload bitrate by resolution: 720p 5 Mbps, 1080p 8 Mbps, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 0 4 8 12 Mbps 5 Mbps 8 Mbps 12 Mbps 720p 1080p 1080p at 60 fps

Those figures describe the file the creator sends to YouTube. What YouTube streams back is re-encoded at lower rates, and your MP4 is built from that stream, so the delivered file is usually a good deal smaller. Treat 60 MB per minute as an upper reference: the stream YouTube serves is re-encoded at a lower rate, so a YouTube to MP4 1080p download is normally smaller.

Where the MP4 plays, and what a Short looks like

The MP4 opens on phones, tablets, Windows and Mac computers, smart televisions and every common video editor, with no codec packs to install. Picture and sound sit in one container. The devices section shows where the browser puts the file on each kind of device.

Shorts save as a vertical MP4. A youtube.com/shorts/ link is accepted like any other, and the file keeps its portrait frame, so it fills a phone screen and sits between black bars on a television. Shorts run up to three minutes (YouTube Help), so the files stay small at any resolution. The Shorts guide covers the format and the MP3 option.

When to press MP4, and when MP3 is the better button

Press MP4 when the picture carries the meaning: a tutorial to follow away from a signal, a lecture where the slides matter, footage you intend to cut. Press MP3 when you would happily listen with the screen off; the audio file is a fraction of the size, converts more quickly, and plays in car stereos and music apps. There is no penalty for taking both from the same link. The choosing section has a side-by-side table, and the 320 kbps guide explains what the MP3 bitrate does and does not tell you.

How to download a YouTube video in 1080p, and why it takes longer than an MP3

The procedure is the same as for any other link. The one difference is that a YouTube to MP4 1080p conversion takes longer than an MP3, because there is more data to fetch and package.

  1. Copy the video's address. Any YouTube link to a single video works: youtube.com/watch?v=, youtu.be/, Shorts, finished live streams, embed and mobile addresses. Timestamps and playlist tags on the end are ignored; the accepted links list has the full set.
  2. Paste it into the field and press MP4. Pressing Enter does the same. There is no resolution menu to set; turning a YouTube link to MP4 is one press.
  3. Wait for MP4 ready. The status line names the video once the service reports its title, and the bar fills as the stages pass. The wait grows with the length of the video and the size of its stream. Esc cancels.

If the line shows Conversion failed with a code, the video is usually private, members-only, age-restricted or a live stream that has not finished; the troubleshooting guide works through each code. Videos up to about 90 minutes convert reliably.

How to check the resolution of the file you got

The quickest check is the file's own properties, which every system shows without extra software. The figure you want is the frame size, written as width by height: 1920 × 1080 is 1080p, 1280 × 720 is 720p, and a Short shows the smaller number first because the frame is portrait.

If the file says 720p and you expected 1080p, open the video on YouTube and check the player's quality menu. If 1080p is not offered there, the uploader never provided it, and no converter can hand you a resolution the source does not have.

Frequently asked questions

Does YTMP3 download YouTube videos in 1080p?

Yes, when the upload provides 1080p. Press MP4 and the YTMP3 MP4 converter takes the highest resolution the source offers, capped at 1080p; most ordinary videos come back at 720p.

Why did I get 720p instead of 1080p?

Because 720p was the best stream the source offered; the uploader sets the ceiling and nothing is upscaled. Check the quality menu in YouTube's own player: if 1080p is missing there, it was never available to download.

Can I download 4K or 1440p?

No. 1080p is the ceiling on YTMP3, so a 4K or 1440p upload arrives at 1080p. Nothing is enlarged to fake a higher figure either.

How big is a 1080p MP4?

Usually under 60 MB per minute. That figure comes from YouTube's recommended 1080p upload bitrate of 8 Mbps; the stream you download is re-encoded lower, so the file is normally a good deal smaller.

Does the MP4 include the sound?

Yes. The MP4 holds the video and its soundtrack in one file, so there is nothing to combine afterwards. If you only want the audio, press MP3 instead.

One press, the best resolution the upload allows

There is no quality menu to get wrong, because YTMP3 already takes the best stream the source offers, up to 1080p. Copy the video's address and paste the link into the converter.
